After graduating from Canterbury College of Art with a degree in Graphic design and a few years as a book designer, Priscilla began to work as a freelance artist, and has illustrated over 40 books for children for a variety of authors, including Harry Secombe, Adrian Mitchell, Julia Jarman, Michael Rosen and Hilary McKay, as well as occasionally illustrating her own words too!

After many years in London and even more in Suffolk, she is now settled in Kent with her husband the artist David Hayward and has a studio at the Creek Creative building in Faversham, where she works rather untidily, but with great enthusiasm!

My art background is in sculpture, but photography has always been a passion of mine, from documenting my art work to projecting images digitally in to installation spaces. I now use photography as a creative tool to explore environments that have a sense of time and place and often find themes of abandonment within my work.

Fiona studied Fine Art at Chirstchurch University, Canterbury, Kent from 1993-1997.

My paintings have evolved through observation and love of the local seascapes. Sometimes I include locked away images of childhood memories from Israel and maritime Southern France. These are often ghost-like depictions of figures and scenes from the past that re-emerge in my work.

The seascape has been my primary working subject while living on the Kentish coast in and around Whitstable. I am constantly inspired by the ever-changing palette of colours and unique atmosphere and the understated beauty of this coastline. The geographical position and other elements contrive to create an almost surreal quality of light in certain condtions. The colour and mood of the shallow sea changes swiftly according to tide and wind direction, and with constantly changing skies, dramatic visual effects are often witnessed; from the mercury millpond stillness to the restless muddy impatience of an estuary tide, whipped up by a North-westerly gale.

I am fascinated by the irresistible attraction that we feel to be at the sea’s edge. I think of my paintings as a celebration of the mystery and ever-changing beauty of sea, land and sky, where they meet and the relationship that we all find difficult to resist.

I take inspiration from old Masters such as Cezanne, Turner and Whistler, along with contempory painters Euan Uglow and Fred Cunning.

I am a textile artist working in contemporary textiles, specialising in batik, printing and machine embroidery.

My greatest love is colour, and I usually work on a large scale and enjoy working on designs, especially when I’m experimenting with techniques, materials and colours.
