Colour is my key to the door of an Aladdin’s cave. When I treat colour effectively, it’s like revealing a treasure trove of exciting and unexpected things in a secret place.

Each colour has its own character which with the right intervention can foster a unique connection with another. Relationships can vary where two colours have the ability to integrate or repel one another. My aim is to offer a combination that creates harmony, beauty and energy while avoiding impoverishment embodied by coarseness and negativity. My real satisfaction however, comes from my audience identifying these alliances within the whole or any part of the painting.

I begin a piece with little consideration towards the finished article. The physical landscape of the North Downs surrounding my studio is the only vehicle I use to influence these abstract works. The canvas will evolve as I layer on more colour while manipulating the transparency, viscosity and flow of brush marks. These elements I’ll pursue until the canvas sings and the door to the cave is open. The result, after what is often a labour intensive process can look and feel as spontaneous as a chemical reaction.

Acrylics are a superb medium for attaining these goals. They are malleable, mix well and relatively quick drying depending on the thickness I choose to lay down. A final coat of gloss enhances the feeling of energy and character that would ordinarily be unobtainable.

These explorations in colour challenge an inherent resistance I had previously to using colours unhindered. It has been a liberating performance and experience for me and I view these paintings as each having a life and character of their own.

My work is a little different it involves colour, texture and words. I am a great believer in the power of words and water and apply this when preparing each canvas to work on from the water I dip my brushes in to the final strokes of acrylic paint, when I first started doing this my paintings dramatically changed, they have become more vibrant and beautiful and full of energy, the words are placed under the fresh, clean water I use and written on each prepared canvas before I begin to paint, I never know how my paintings will turn out, it’s something that just happens, the words lead me through a path of feelings and thoughts that turn into colours, each piece is unique.

My passion is combining acrylic with text-based collage. I was first inspired to use typography in my work because it creates such fine detail. Having worked in graphic design I felt comfortable with the relationship between collage and paint. Early works had too much of a graphic feel and it became important for me to seek a deeper quality within my painting.
I have resisted the temptation to use headlines in my work, as small print creates a fine mesh, which adds to the work, whereas large text can be distracting. This approach may change as my work evolves and I tread a finer line between art and design.

Balancing the opacity of paint has become as important to me as mixing colour, as transparency is vital for the text to show through. I play with this balance until I am satisfied that I have successfully communicated the underlying message of the piece.

The inspiration for my work often comes from an article I have read or simply the beauty of the text itself, with reoccurring themes of communication, society and decay. Each painting has its own back-story and I like to think that every painting is a new interpretation of the original article.
Communication through structure rather than language is where I am currently focusing my attention and my recent sketches are reflecting more architectural forms.
I am very much looking forward to taking this further in larger paintings.

As I am half Portuguese, most of my recent work depicts locations in Portugal (e.g Cascais, Azoia ,Sintra and Lisbon). Also I enjoy working on other subject matters related to the U.K and using different medium such as watercolour, acrylics and oils. My earlier works are etchings, screen prints and abstract oil paintings. I want to continue printmaking and I am also keen in pursuing with photography.

In 2007 I participated in a group project alongside Antony Gormely to produce part of the setting for the channel 4 film ’Margate Exodus.’ we were given a lorry container ( 40ft long) and had to turn it into a church made from recycled goods.

My work for my degree was about rhizometric formations ( Latin name for root and term used by the philosopher Deleuze. ) which showed a mixture of drawings in combination with sculpture.

I have worked with paints and inks for over 34 years, initially decorating fine bone china for Royal Crown Derby for 3 years, followed by a 17 year periodwhen I printed fine art etchings for many successful local artists including Graham Clarke, Michael Chaplin and Robert R Greenhalf.

Feeling the need to expand my mind and develop more self-confidence, at the age of 39 I took on a graduate diploma in counselling and I have since specialised in the field of eating disorders, working with people suffering from anorexia, bulimia or binge-eating.

Over the past 2 years I have been developing my own artwork which provides a calming, restorative balance to the psychological demands of my counselling work.
I work on canvas using acrylic paints, which I love for their vibrancy, texture and immediacy. I mainly work from photographs that I have taken myself although sometimes I will use images provided by the friends or family who have commissioned a painting.

I have been inspired by the work of Georgia O Keefe whose flower paintings have a life and boldness that I resonate with. I also love the photographs of Christopher Beane who creates images using flowers and oil colours floating on water which fire my imagination.

In my own work I see each painting as an individual portrait, trying to capture the essence of each flower as a unique being with its own intricate complexity, which is very like what I do with my clients in my counselling work.

I am a self taught artist from Bromley, Kent and I work in a number of traditional media and different styles to suit what I want to convey or what will suit the job at hand in terms of commission work whether it be small scale pen and ink or large scale set decoration for films.

I have worked with a number of recording artists doing such things as album covers and video character designs which has let me practise my skills within an industry whilst also continuing my personal work alongside.

Within my own work I like to focus on my surrounding area of South East London and North Kent and the local stories and mythologies. I like to paint scenes from my history but at times I may replace myself or the local characters with glamorous ladies who look like they have just stepped off the catwalk to contradict the un-glamour of the suburban middle class areas and the questionable actions taking place.

My goal is to paint a picture with which an onlooker could get an instant feel for the mood and location, whether that is an impossibility I do not know and whether I will ever know that I have achieved this I similarly do not know but like the process of trying.

Kent artist Paul Apps is a passionate wildlife and fine artist. His work captures the unique character of the subject and interaction with its natural environment. While Paul creates images of wildlife from all over the world, he frequently returns to the expanse of the African landscape and fauna to inspire his grand canvases. Since his first visit to the continent in 1989, Paul has travelled there annually to collect reference and experience the thrilling game and panoramas.
Increasing demand Paul turned professional in 1987.

Ever since, Paul’s success and reputation as a wildlife, bird, dog, Landscape, Sporting and Plein air artist has flourished. As well as exhibitions in the UK, artworks have been displayed in Africa, Singapore, Europe and the USA, where his first solo show sold out on the opening night. Sotheby’s, Christies and Bonhams have all seen images sell for record prices. With over 60 fine art prints to his credit, originals are also keenly sought after by collectors around the globe.

Furthermore, Paul has taught art techniques for many years, and contributed to several tuition magazines. He has demonstrated a vast array of art products for various prestigious materials manufacturers. Paul now teaches students on a one to one or small group basis, whilst also conducting workshops several times a year.

Supporting wildlife conservation has always been of paramount importance to Paul. Sales of his work have helped raise thousands of pounds for various charities, including Tuskforce, The Born Free Foundation, The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation and The Injured Jockey’s Fund.

Paul is currently using impressionistic brushstrokes, mingled with the detail of fur or feather, to create outstanding compositions. He is also exploring landscape and Maritime subjects, taking his love of painting En plein air to new and more invigorated levels than ever before, experiencing the essence of a scene and capturing the impression it has upon him. The freshness of applying the paint cannot be duplicated in a studio, and that is what makes it so exciting.

Subjects include Sporting, Landscape, Plein air, Animals, Birds and Marine.
