The Art of Recession
The/Re:Generation Exhibition

Artists in Maidstone come together to show how talent and imagination can combat the dilapidating effects of an economic downturn. Prints, paintings, photographs and all manner of creations will be displayed by locally based artists and those studying at the University for the Creative Arts. These are complemented by participation from two heavyweights; illustrator and humourist Graham Clarke and Jim Moir, better known as the fabulous Vic Reeves, who will both be exhibiting work. The/Re:Generation Exhibition will be sharing their art with the people of Maidstone this March and proving that there is more to talk about in a recession than simply money.

Maidstone, Kent – March 18th to March 27th 2010: The/Re:Generation Exhibition opens at The Royal Star Arcade, Maidstone to showcase work by local and locally based artists, including works from Graham Clarke and Vic Reeves.

With so many vacant shop fronts adorning even the most bustling of UK cities, many people have been left wondering whether anything will fill the gaps they have left. This is the inspiration behind The/Re:Generation Exhibition. A selection of Maidstone\’s local artists will be turning an empty lot within the Royal Star Arcade into a hive of creativity and excitement to demonstrate the role of art within the local community and to help to make their work more accessible to the public. Their aim is simple: to take art away from the daunting, white-washed walls of the Gallery and use it to fill the gaps in our everyday lives.

Auspicious young artist, UCA graduate and event organiser, Jennifer Price has brought together almost thirty artists to contribute to the exhibition, so there will be no shortage of talent to admire or styles to review. Paintings, photography exhibits and prints will all be on show and for sale at the event along with the chance to win a piece of art free of charge. Acclaimed Maidstone based illustrator, Graham Clarke has lent his support to the venture, along with Jim Moir, better known as Vic Reeves. Both will be displaying work within the exhibition. These artists have come together as a community in themselves to stage this event, with the hope of having a similar impact on the town at large. Moreover, with the rumours and proposals for the local University to re-locate it\’s Maidstone campus, THE/RE:Generation hopes to illustrate the opportunities for studying and emerging artists, and create new possibilities in the hope of showing the worth of the Maidstone location.

The exhibition begins on Thursday 18th March with a private view from 5pm until 8pm for press, sponsors, VIPs and the public, complete with champagne and live musical entertainment. The exhibition will then be open to the public on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th March, and from Monday 22nd until Saturday 27th March from 10am until 5pm each day within the Royal Star Arcade.

This exhibition has been staged through the support of Maidstone Borough Council and invaluable sponsorship from DSM Graphics, located in Tovil, and the Royal Star Arcade have been instrumental in bringing this idea to fruition, with Gravesend and London-based band Silvers also lending support by adding a musical contribution to the opening night gala.

Councillor Chris Garland, Leader of the Council, “In this time of economic downturn it is important that we keep Maidstone vibrant and exciting; a place people want to visit. Exhibitions like this are to be commended, they breathe new life into the town and create a happy marriage between culture and business.”
