A SENSE OF PLACE
My paintings are simply about the places I love to visit close to where I live. Open, apparently unremarkable landscapes which come alive under spectacular skies. Remote buildings that have given up the fight against expanses of rampant vegetation.
Influences must be Pieter Breughel in terms of landscape although there is a distinctive lack of human presence only hinted at by the inclusion of man made influences on the environment; pylons, abandoned buildings, lone tractors. Birds feature in nearly all my works, sometimes by the inclusion of a nest, or occasionally in a more menacing form. The rich vibrant colours of the Medieval farming tableaux Les Tres Riches Heures have strongly influenced my more recent works.
Materials include anything that can be applied to a canvas. Organic material peculiar to the site of the painting is added to provide surface texture and a sense of place.
