I spent my childhood in Northumberland and now I am living in Kent. I studied a BA and MA in Fine Art at De Montfort, Leicester and a PGCE at Christchurch Canterbury. My practice consists of both printmaking and painting both of which are inspired by my surroundings. I experiment with layers in both disciplines to create a narrative within my work.

At present I am working with watercolours to portray nature as I see it, using vibrant colours although true to my earlier printmaking each painting has it’s hidden past and associated memories.

Unseen: the Weird and Wonderful World of Infrared
Wednesday 29th February – Tuesday 6th March 2012

Infrared energy is light that we cannot see. It exists on the radiation spectrum beneath visible light, meaning all around us is an unseen world. We feel far infrared radiation as heat, we can’t see it. But near infrared radiation is unseen and unfelt.

Unseen allows the viewer to see infrared light using special techniques to capture IR radiation reflected by a scene. This exhibition opens up this alien world and invites the viewer to see it in all its strangely magical, ethereal beauty.

For Kerene, the physical ‘making’ of her art is what drives her practise. She’s in her element when she can explore materials and processes that create texture or sculptural elements to combine her love of assemblage, fine art photography and painting. Her inspiration comes from spaces and places near to home, in the hidden treasures of the woodlands and the changing Kent coastline.

Kerene will draw upon nostalgic reminiscences of childhood or focus on the impermanence and fragility of life and glory in its beauty, power and mystery. Her intention is to highlight the subtle nuances of the simple things found in the natural world, to share her sense of awe in the gifts we are given but often overlook and to blend this into her practice.

Kaleidoscope Gallery Sevnoaks..

Beta Version 2.0

19 January – 10 March 2012

Beta Version 2.0 expands on some of the questions raised by the previous show, “Exhibition: Beta”. The contemporary art space operates without permanent collection or archive to set the context, but instead offers fleeting glimpses at experimental works. Reflective of what is current, work can be valid without longevity.

Beta Version 2.0 looks at the contemporary art exhibition as a temporary collection, with work that addresses the transience or otherwise of current practice, and explores the relationship between collection and curation; in particular the roles played by artist, curator and audience in creating work for display.

As part of this show Dan Simpson is asking twitter users to contribute lines for a poem about ‘curating a collection’. He will collate all responses into a poem and will perform at the opening of the exhibition at 6:45pm on 19 January. Contributions can be made on twitter #collectedpoem

The exhibition is free to visitors.

Exhibiting Artists: Bridgette Ashton, Diane Dever, Ruth Geldard, Toby Huddlestone, Pavilion, Angus Pryor, Dan Simpson, Mark J Smith.

The Sevenoaks Kaleidoscope Gallery is a contemporary space run by Kent County Council to show new work from established and emerging Kent artists. The gallery sits alongside the library and museum within the Sevenoaks Kaleidoscope building. The museum is currently showing an exhibition of personal collections.

My medium is documentary photography. I use this to capture ways of life in society, looking at the things people do when they are out and about within their environments. I could say that I take candid photos of a person’s life, which the viewers would not usually think about taking photographs of. My past projects were to document Broad Street, the Birmingham Wholesale Markets, and the Stratford Road, the point being that these projects were to find ways of capturing the day-to-day lives and on-going social events taking place in these environments.

I studied art and design at Cornwall College of Art and Plymouth University way back in the early 80′s. I have had a successful career as a civil servant but have also produced abstract photographic artwork for many years on a semi-professional basis. My colleague and I recently established a company called Pickford Studios and are now producing high quality, contemporary, non-limited and limited-edition prints for domestic customers, but also for the hotel, restaurant, office and interior design trades. On our website, we currently have 12 portfolios of 12 prints (each print has a run of 150), so there is something there for everyone. Our prints are reproduced using the ‘Giclee’ process – arguably the highest quality digital printing process available – and we only print on superior quality Hahnemuhle paper.

I believe our artwork speaks for itself. But we pride ourselves on using only the best materials and best means to reproduce that artwork for our customers.
