For Kerene, the physical ‘making’ of her art is what drives her practise. She’s in her element when she can explore materials and processes that create texture or sculptural elements to combine her love of assemblage, fine art photography and painting. Her inspiration comes from spaces and places near to home, in the hidden treasures of the woodlands and the changing Kent coastline.

Kerene will draw upon nostalgic reminiscences of childhood or focus on the impermanence and fragility of life and glory in its beauty, power and mystery. Her intention is to highlight the subtle nuances of the simple things found in the natural world, to share her sense of awe in the gifts we are given but often overlook and to blend this into her practice.

I work in a variety of media including photography, drawing, printmaking traditional and digital media as well as painting.

The impetus for my work derives from a desire to examine and represent the ineffable, the numinous, the essential nature of this transient world we live in.

Much of my practice examines the relationship between psychological and architectural space.

Impermanence and transformation in relation to matter and consciousness are recurring themes in my work.

I often begin my practice by working with a series of complex images from which I edit and abstract into ever simpler compositions.

Art is something I have always had a passion for. At the very start of my making career I held an intense interest in collage and printmaking, and was applying both of these techniques to my pictoral study of my home town Herne Bay. My work up until recently, has always been about Herne Bay, as I find it an attractive starting point for any project, as I always want to celebrate and reminisce in it’s post war glory.

As an artist my interests lay in several different processes. From printmaking, to photography, to drawing to assemblage. I always try and explore all of the different avenues of the tools that are available to me, this way I can always express, in some way or another, exactly the point I am trying to make. And this is what I like about my work, when I finally arrive at an outcome I feel suitably satisfied in what I have produced and in what material they are represented in.
My work lays somewhere between nostalgia and an interest in the human condition. Exploring memories and romanticism about different places and people. All through the different techniques I employ.

My art as it stands at the moment, shows an interest in conspiracy, mysticism and all things ‘Top Secret’. The work is questioning of what people believe in, and of information that they deem important to their continuation of existence. It is a nostalgic catalogue of the ‘larger than life’ tales and mishaps of the late 20th century. Bringing to light the events that have been laying under our noses this whole time.

In the future I plan to push the ideas presented in my current project, ideally through the medium of artist’s books. Juxtaposing different ideas and images in a more broad and obsessive scale.

I studied Multimedia Design and Technology at UKC in 2003. I then trained as a Design Technology teacher, I am now studying for an MA at Chirstchurch. I am Head of Department of Design Technology and Engineering at a large secondary school.

I like creating all manner of things from paintings, carvings, furniture, sculptures, toys, drawings, products and digital media. I like to experiment; combining traditional with modern mediums. For example acrylic sheets spliced into aged oak in furniture production.

I have a keen interest in 80s cartoons, vinyl toys, urban art, tiki carving and furniture design.

I have a habit of fixating on one idea until I happy with an outcome and then never revisiting it again.

We are both also artists and there are hundreds of traditional artworks, album covers, flyer designs, brochures etc connected with Sister Company. I have lived in Ramsgate but now live in London, whereas Mary is still there. Many of our videos out of those not shot in Europe are filmed in Kent, and that goes for Mary’s solo works too.

Sister Company art is largely video and promotional but there are also animations and our stageshow (currently under construction) involves several installations.

Curiosity regarding the possibility of a feminine sensibility to materials and evidence in my own practice of certain behaviours revealed in the process, began the research. Recognition of this feminine sensibility within the selection, handling and manipulation of objects and materials, continues to drive the practice. Physical experimentation into the nature and behaviour of materials and processes, affords a naturally rich, cognitive space in which ideas can be tempered. Whilst stressing the materiality of the work, it is the behavioural processes that define it rather than the end product, making necessary a multimedia as well as mixed media categorisation.
